Monday 2nd July 2012 – walk **** rain rain rain :(
It poured down all night and virtually all day today too! We had a lie in
and read then leisurely breakfast before leaving and driving to
Pembrokeshire. We went across a moor which looked like it would be
beautiful but couldn’t see anything other than a few sheep because of low
cloud :( Stopped at Carmarthen to shop at Morrisons (lots of bread and
cake basically – comfort food!) and then to McDonalds for Wi-Fi and large
coffees. Wasted a few hours in there and chatted to a very nice lady about
VW camper vans as she has bought a van and is converting it bit by bit.
Drove to Little Haven and parked in the car park 10 minutes into the free
time :) Had a long walk along the cliffs – it has actually stopped
raining! It is very muddy but very dramatic :) Walked back along the road
and found the perfect parking place for tonight right on the cliff top.
Drove off to Wooltack Point which overlooks Skomer Island where they have
done reports on Springwatch. The scenery is very dramatic and the black
cows were pretty scary! There are supposed to be lots of puffins on the
island and we did see two flying but none on the island as it is too far
away for the binocs:( You can see lots of birds flying around and lots
bobbing in the water but can’t identify them. We saw lots of guillemots
flying past and the best of all the birds were the gannets diving into the
water like mad things to catch fish :) While looking through the binocs at
the gannets Mag saw a fin and was thrilled to see a dolphin:) Got me to
look and it took a while but I did see one and then there were lots and
lots :) We couldn’t believe it and sat watching them for ages – until
nearly 10 o clock. You can go out to Skomer on a boat trip for £10 each
then another £10 to go onto the Island and with the £5 to park it would
be £45 for us to go!!! Although there was a camper in the car park there
we decided to return to our cliff top lay- by so arrived there just after
10 and had a quick cuppa soup and roll for tea! The whole day was salvaged
by the great trip this evening :) We had a great laugh listening to radio
Wales – the presenter was hilarious and they did play some good records
– a weird mix! They talked about the weather a lot and made lots of
jokes.
Tuesday 3rd July 2012 – walk *** rain rain rain then more rain chilly too
:(
Well just for a surprise it rained all night again and all morning too! We
had a lie in and read then leisurely breakfast and read yesterdays papers.
There were some hardy walkers out but it didn’t look much fun as they
trooped past dripping in their wet gear :( We had a nice chat with a
couple and their dog who are staying in Broad Haven. Drove to Dale and
parked just outside the village (because it was free) right on the estuary.
Packed a flask and some cuppa soup, some crisps and the left over fruit
bread from yesterday. We set out (in no rain amazingly!) to walk round the
welsh coast path to St. Anns Head. It was a great walk and we saw lots of
birds (particularly at a very pretty pond). We had a great game with a
pair of stonechats who were jumping just a little in front of us for ages.
There were lots of wild flowers including early purple orchids. The
coastline is very dramatic with red rocks and ...... lots of red mud! We
saw few hardy souls on the way round – everyone is talking about the
dreadful weather and getting into the spirit!! Just before we got to St
Anns lighthouse it started to drizzle and then a big cloud descended over
the whole area and it rained quite hard :( We sat at a bench attached to
some holiday cottages in the old lighthouse and the occupants turned up but
were happy for us to stay there. Set off again and decided to walk back on
the road. Met an man walking up the road from the car park – a really
long way from the point and were Rob and Hannah stayed when they were here
last month. Had a chat with him and also with a family who are here from
South Africa! What a dreadful week to pick :( We had walked quite a way
along the road back to Dale when the old man came past and offered us a
lift which we gratefully accepted as it was raining quite nicely! Had a
cuppa and cake and read and dozed then had a tin of chunky chicken with
some veg for tea before going for a quick walk along the estuary as it had
stopped raining and was just very foggy!
